Choose dog grooming tools.

Whether you want to prepare your pooch for a dog show or you just want to keep him looking his best without numerous trips to the groomer, you can learn the techniques and outfit your grooming collection with the best tools and supplies to make the job simple. Quality grooming tools are an investment in your dog’s coat, nails, mouth and ears.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1
A sturdy grooming table is essential.
A sturdy grooming table is essential.

A grooming table with a grooming arm holds your dog in place and saves your back. The best grooming tables are hydraulic: you lower them to allow your dog to step on and then raise them until the dog is at a comfortable height for grooming. A sturdy grooming arm may fasten to the front, side or back of the table and should have one or more hooks on which to attach a dog’s leash or other safety supports to keep her in place.

  2. Step 2

Non-slip covering is essential on a grooming table. Without it, your dog may slip when wet, losing her footing and choking if she falls off the table. If the grooming table does not have a non-slip surface, use plenty of non-slip bathtub or shower appliques to reduce the risk of a fall.

  3. Step 3

A dog’s coat is the largest and often the most difficult area to groom. For short-hair breeds, a simple comb and a natural bristle brush removes loose hairs and distributes the dog’s natural oils to create a healthy shiny coat.

  4. Step 4

Long-hair breeds require more grooming. A metal comb with a handle removes excess hair and debris while detangling fur before mats can form. For existing mats, a dematting tool gently cuts through the mat, making it easier to brush the tangles out.

  5. Step 5

A slicker is a flat paddle with dozens of tiny pins that provide a finished look for long-hair breeds. Used after basic brushing, a slicker makes your dog’s coat look smooth and silky.

  6. Step 6

You can bath some dogs on a grooming table if you’re outdoors and the dog does not mind water straight from the hose. A professional bathing station allows the dog to walk up a ramp and enter an elevated tub with grooming restraints to hold him in place during the bathing process.

  7. Step 7

Adjustable sprayers that operate with one hand let you control the water while keeping your other hand on your pooch for comfort and safety. In addition, you may add an on-demand water heater in your bathing station to warm the bath water.

Not only does drying your dog show his coat to its best advantage, it is healthier than allowing him to air-dry, especially if he is prone to skin problems or ear infections from lingering moisture. Purchase a dryer designed specifically for dogs.

  9. Step 9

In most dogs, long toenails are unsightly. In many show dogs, long nails may count against the dog’s score. A good pair of nail clippers and a cordless Dremel allow you to trim your dog’s nails and then smooth out the sharp edges.

  10. Step 10

Some breeds require trimming to bring their coats up to breed standards. A quality pair of dog shears is invaluable in a groomer’s arsenal of tools. In addition, a pair of good clippers with adjustable fur guides makes shaving your dog a breeze. Other trimming tools for specialty use include stripper knives, shedding tools and razor rakes for removing unwanted fur.
