Things You'll Need:
- paper pencil eraser architectural scale (not necessary but helpful) measuring tape 30-60-90 triangle 45-45-45 triangle
-
Step 1
Measure all the walls heights and lengths so that you know the general perimeter shape and size of the kitchen.
-
Step 2
Measure the existing cabinet lengths, depths, and heights.
-
Step 3
Measure the height and width of the existing doors and windows as well as making note of their location in the kitchen.
-
Step 4
Draw the general shape of the kitchen on a piece of paper using the architectural scale and triangles. Draw the kitchen floor plan to a quarter inch or eighth inch scale. Drawing the kitchen to a scale will help you visualize the size of all the items that need to be placed in it.
-
Step 1
Design the kitchen so that the work triangle is comfortable and easy to maneuver. The work triangle is based on the location of the sink, the cooktop range, and the refrigerator. Each leg of the triangle should add between 12 to 26 feet.
-
Step 2
Locate the sink underneath a window if possible. Ideally the sink is placed first and then the other two legs of the triangle are placed around it.
-
Step 3
Locate the cooktop range on the peninsula. This allows you the opportunity to create a bar or seating area in front of the cook top range and allows for it to be the center of the kitchen space.
-
Step 4
Locate the refrigerator so that the door can swing open and provide two people access at the same time. This means it should not be located in a corner or block the entry of the kitchen.
-
Step 5
Design the peninsula kitchen so that the traffic moves throughout the house and comfortably through the kitchen.
