How to Replace Spotlights

Exterior spotlights are great for illuminating an area as well as for security. They come in types that have either motion sensors or just lights. These high-powered lights can illuminate even the darkest of areas. The lights are inexpensive and are relatively easy to install. There is no reason to hire an electrician when all you need is a little time and minimal skill. Spotlights come in a variety of styles and colors to match your exterior décor.

• Screwdriver Wire nuts Utility knife Silicone caulk Small wrench

Instructions

Replacing Spotlights

1. Shut off the power to the old spotlight. This can be done at either the fuse box or at the switch.

2. Using a utility knife, remove the caulk around the old light.

3. Remove the old spotlight by taking off the screws or bolts and the wire nuts.

4. Line up the new wall plate with the holes in the junction box, and pull the wires through.

5. Attach the wires to the new fixture--black to black, white to white and ground to ground. Put on new wire nuts.

6. Put the rest of the fixture up, and attach it with screws or nuts provided by the manufacturer.

7. Caulk between the light and the wall to ensure a weather-tight seal.

8. Insert proper wattage bulbs.

9. Turn the power back on or flip the switch.
