How to Decorate Candles With Glitter

Candle decorating is a craft that's quick and easy. Using glitter will add sparkle and interesting textures to your candles. Choose either votive or pillar candles for this project. Votives are small, usually 2 inches or less in diameter. Pillar candles are typically square, round or triangular with a diameter of 3 inches or more. Make sure to use candles with a smooth surface, rather than beeswax candles, which have an uneven finish.

Things You'll Need

  • Paraffin wax
  • Wax paper
  • Tongs
  • Glitter glue (optional)
  • Cover a flat working surface with several layers of old newspapers. Melt 1 lb. of paraffin wax in a large double boiler according to the packaging instructions. Keep the wax warm enough for it to remain melted.

  • Place two large pieces of wax paper on top of the newspapers. Pour a generous pile of glitter onto one of the sheets of wax paper, and spread it out into a thick layer.

  • Set the candle in the melted paraffin and quickly coat all surfaces to which you wish to apply glitter. Remove the candle from the hot melted wax by gripping the wick with tongs.

  • Lay the candle down on the layer of glitter, and roll it around to coat it completely. If you don't want a thick coat of glitter on your candle, you can sprinkle the desired amount onto it instead of rolling it in the glitter.

  • Set the candle upright on the other sheet of wax paper to set the glitter. Place the glittered candle in a room where it will be undisturbed for at least 24 hours.

  • Use tubes of colored glitter glue to add further embellishments, if you wish. Allow to set for at least 24 hours.
