A lighted ceiling fan beautifies a room and creates a gentle breeze. Central lighting from the fan illuminates the entire room, while light from a table lamp only shines on the person sitting next to it. Installing a light kit to a ceiling fan requires a few added steps that will allow you to get the full functionality of the appliance. If you've already connected the wiring for the light kit to the ceiling when you installed the fan, the installation will be easy.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Phillips or a flathead screwdriver Ceiling fan kit Components necessary to complete ceiling-fan construction Light bulb(s) that fit the ceiling fan light
  1. Step 1

Turn off the light switch and the circuit breaker in the room where you're installing the light kit. Perform the installation during the daytime, when there is natural light. If you install the light kit at night, get as much light as possible from other rooms. A spotlight that you can aim toward your working area is a great help.

  2. Step 2

Connect the wire from the bottom of the fan motor to the wire from the light kit fitter. If you haven't connected the light wire from the fan to the one in the ceiling, remove the canopy from the ceiling and connect the black and blue wires to the black wire from the ceiling or the blue wire from the fan to the red wire in the ceiling. This will allow the fan and light to be controlled by the pull-chains on the fan or by different light switches. Remove the canopy when you're done.

  3. Step 3

Connect the light kit fitter to the fan motor by aligning the holes in each piece of hardware and inserting screws to fasten them.

  4. Step 4

Install the light bulbs on the light kit.

  5. Step 5

Push the light shade onto the threaded end of the light kit until the pull chains come out of the bottom and then thread the center cap onto the bottom of the light shade. Attach the pull chains' ends and the installation is complete. Turn on the circuit breaker and the light switch to make sure the ceiling fan works.
