Give your children an option of going to sleep or reading a story before bedtime. They will likely choose the story because most kids try to delay going to sleep. Your children will associate reading with fun rather than it being a chore. Read them a story that stimulates their imagination and is positive and uplifting. You don't want to give them nightmares with a scary story before bed time.

Sign them up for a summer reading program at your local library. This will give them a group of other kids with whom they can share their love of reading. They can also discuss books, characters and stories.

    • 3

Create an incentive program for them. For example for every ten books they read you could take them out for pizza or buy them ice cream. Make sure that they tell you about each book that they've read and ask them questions about it. What did they learn, was there a moral to the story, who was their favorite character?

Allow them to see the movie only if they've read the book first. So many of the great books today are being made into movies, but they often lose something in the translation. Make it a point to have your children read the book before they are allowed to see the movie. Two of the best book-to-movie adaptations are the Harry Potter movies and the "Chronicles of Narnia."
