How to Learn Laser Tattoo Removal
Tattoo removal is most commonly done by lasers today. In order to become certified to practice laser tattoo removal, you need to pass a couple of post-college courses and complete a training period. After becoming certified, you'll be ready to remove tattoos at a medical partnership or spa, or you can set up an independent practice.

Becoming a Specialist

You first need to be a dermatologist or medical professional before becoming certified in laser tattoo removal.

Enroll in a certified laser specialist (CLS) class in order to learn the basics of lasers. You will study how lasers work and the safest way to use them on people. At the end of the class, you will be certified to use lasers.

Enroll in a laser tattoo removal (LTR) class in order to become a tattoo removal specialist. You'll study how to tell which tattoos are candidates for laser removal, techniques for removal and how to care for healing skin. At the end of the class, you will be certified to remove tattoos using lasers.

Study under a specialist to observe the specialist's technique and get a chance to practice some of the techniques.

Get insurance. Once you have completed classes and trained under a specialist, you are ready to practice your new specialty. You need specialized insurance in order to open a practice involving laser tattoo removal.

Tips & Warnings
In some states, non-medical professionals and tattoo artists can take CLS and LTR classes and become tattoo removal specialists, but the training is more intense and takes longer.
