Shiitake mushrooms originated in Asia, where they have been cultivated for more than 2,000 years, but it has only been in since the mid-1900s that they have been sold commercially. Now, many farms in the United States cultivate them as well. Due to their rich flavor, shiitake mushrooms are a great addition of protein to vegetable stir fry dishes.
