How to Get a Company's Federal & State Tax Identification Number

Most companies are reluctant to divulge what they consider private information, including their EIN numbers---the federal ID numbers that businesses use when paying their taxes. It can be just as hard in some states to get a business's state ID tax number. But FEINSearch.com can give you access to this kind of information.

1. Go to FEINSearch.com and sign up for a free trial account. This allows you five free limited searches. If you want more than this, you can sign up for a plan or pay as you search.

2. Click on the verification link that FEINSearch.com will send you, and then log in to your account with your email address and the password you entered during signup.

3. Click on the "Search Business database." Enter the information you have on the company, such as name and location. Then click "Search." In the possibilities listed, select the one you want. You will be presented with information about the company, including a part of the tax ID number. If FEINSearch.com has the number, you will have to sign up to get the full number.

4. If FEINSearch.com doesn't have the particular state or federal ID number for a company, you can try contacting the secretary of state for the state where the company is incorporated. They might be able to give it to you.
