Step 1
Locate the print screen button on your computer keyboard. The print screen button, usually written as "PrtSc," is traditionally found toward the far right of the top row of keys.
-
Step 2
Take a screen shot, or screenie, by simply pushing the "PrtSc" button on your keyboard. To take a screenie of only the active window you have open, hold down the "Alt" key and then press the "PrtSc" button. This will make your screenie easier to edit.
-
Step 3
Edit your screenie by taking it into an editing program like Microsoft Paint, or similar. Microsoft Paint can be found under the "Accessories" heading of the "Start" menu on your computer. Open the program and then hit the "Ctrl" and "V" keys to paste your screenie into the open editing program.
-
Step 4
Crop your screenie by selecting the rectangle "Crop" tool from the top right hand corner of the tool palette in Microsoft Paint. If you're using an editing program other than Microsoft Paint, select the appropriate cropping tool for your program.
-
Step 5
Drag the Crop tool to select the portion of the screenie that you want. Then press the "Ctrl" and "X" buttons to cut your selection from your original screen shot.
-
Step 6
Open a new file and press the "Ctrl" and "V" buttons to paste your selection to the new file. Drag the corners of the box to make it better showcase your screenie. Eliminate extra white space around the edges. Once you've gotten the box to be the size you want, you can edit other elements of the screenie. Manipulate the image, change colors or add text as desired.
-
Step 7
Save your screenie. Hold the "Ctrl" and "S" buttons down to save your work. When you're asked what file type you'd like to save your screenie as, choose PNG.
