Prepare a Computer for Disposal

Every computer eventually needs to be disposed of, either because it quits working or is simply being replaced. Like many other technological devices, however, a computer is not something you can just throw in the trash and forget about. To dispose of a computer in a fiscally and environmentally responsible way, you must follow a few steps.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the hard drive from the computer. Even if you have deleted all files and reformatted the drive, it is still possible to pull information off of the drive, so if you have ever had any sensitive information on the drive, remove it.

    • 2

Physically destroy the hard drive. Breaking the hard drive into pieces is often the only way to ensure complete destruction of the data that was on the drive. After removing the hard drive from its enclosure (either the laptop or the tower), place it on a piece of concrete such as a sidewalk. It is not necessary to open its case. Hit the drive with a hammer until the drive and the disc inside are in pieces.

    • 3

If destroying a laptop, remove the battery. It is normally located on the bottom of the laptop and can be slid out, either after removing a screw or sliding a latch to the side. The battery will most likely have a battery icon next to it to aid in identification. Never throw a battery into a dumpster or a landfill, as it contains many heavy elements and chemicals that can damage the environment. Contact an authorized disposal center, such as Batteries Plus. Many retail stores such as Best Buy will also accept used batteries for disposal.

If you are replacing the computer with another model from the same manufacturer, check with that manufacturer to see if it accepts trade-ins. Many computer manufacturers such as Dell and Hewlett Packard give a small credit for trading in your used computer.

    • 5

Donate or reuse parts of the computer that never become obsolete, such as the keyboard and the mouse. Many nonprofit organizations will gladly accept these as donations.

    • 6

Never throw away a CRT monitor. These older monitors contain large amounts of lead--sometimes almost 27 percent of their weight may be lead. Dispose of these monitors by donating them or, if not working, by contacting your local landfill for disposal instructions.

Tips & Warnings

  • When destroying the hard drive with a hammer, wear eye protection. A flying piece of metal can blind you.
