How to Paint Window Panes

Window panes must usually be painted from time to time to maintain their aesthetic quality. Most windows are exposed to sun, condensation and rain, and may be subject to repeated opening and closing. Thankfully, applying new paint is a relatively simple process. However, the key to a durable finish is found with properly preparing the surface to be painted and in using a good-quality angled sash brush.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove any loose paint with a paint scraper and sand the area to be painted with fine-grit sandpaper to ensure that the new finish will adhere to the surface.

    • 2

Wipe the window panes with a tack cloth to remove any dirt and debris.

    • 3

Protect the window's glass from paint by applying a strip of blue painter's masking tape to the edges of all glass.

    • 4

Apply one coat of primer to the areas to be painted with an angled sash brush. Begin by applying the primer to the wood next to the glass with the tapered tip of the brush, then gradually move the brush toward the sill. Take care to minimize the amount of paint applied over the crack between the sash and the frame, as the window will be difficult to open once the paint has dried if the crack is painted over. If necessary, move the sash up and down a few times as the primer dries to prevent the primer from drying over the crack. Clean the sash brush with water and allow the primer to dry.

    • 5

Apply one coat of the finish paint with the sash brush in the same manner in which the primer was applied. Clean the sash brush with water and allow the paint to dry.

    • 6

Apply a second coat of paint if the primer shows through the paint or if a spot was missed the first time. Alkyds and latex enamels commonly require two coats. Clean the brush and allow the second coat to dry.

    • 7

Peel the masking tape off of the window. Any paint that has dried on the glass can be removed with a razor blade.
