How to Ventilate a Grow Room

You can turn a closet into a grow room or section off an area in your basement and devote it to your plants. The grow room, though, may then be cut off from the ventilation that is a part of the heating and cooling system in your home. You will need to create an independent ventilation system within your grow room for a continuous exchange of fresh air. This facilitates plant growth and pollination. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Create an opening near the top of your grow room to install an exhaust fan. For a closet or smaller enclosed area, a 6- to 10-inch fan should be sufficient. Make the hole the same size as the fan you intend to use. You will need an electrical outlet within your grow room to plug in the fan.

    • 2

Install the fan in the hole. You can use a bathroom exhaust fan for this project, which will include mounting brackets for installation. The fan should then vent air to the outside of the space.

    • 3

Make the intake hole for your grow room. This should be near the bottom of the grow room. The hole should be 1 1/2 times the diameter of your exhaust fan. For example, if you use a 6-inch fan, your intake hole should be 9 inches in diameter. Fresh air will be drawn into this opening as the exhaust fan draws heated air out.

    • 4

Cover the intake hole with cheesecloth or other porous fabric. This will disallow light but air can still be pulled in.
