How to Color Comics With Photoshop

Adobe Photoshop is a powerful photo editing and graphics program that has achieved worldwide recognition of its capabilities. Its broad array of tools and filters give the user the ability to accomplish almost any graphics-related task. This article will examine Photoshop's coloring abilities, specifically its ability to add color to comics.

Things You'll Need

• Photoshop
• Line drawing or comic

Instructions

1. Open Photoshop. Select "File," click "Open" and open a line drawing you want to colorize.

2. Make sure that all the sections you want to color in are closed in (meaning no gaps in the lines leading to other areas).

3. Change the "Foreground Color" to the color you want to use for the section. Select the "Magic Wand" tool and select the area you want to fill. If you select parts of an area you don't want to fill, click on the "Lasso" tool, hold down the "ALT" key and use the tool to deselect the area you don't want.

4. Click "Select," then "Modify" and "Expand." Make the setting about half the thickness of the lines (try 2 at first). This will expand the selection to about the middle of the lines.

5. Create another layer above this one and use the "Paint Bucket" tool to fill the selection with color. Then change the "Blending Mode" to "Multiply." Select the "Burn" tool and use it to add shadows where you want them.

6. Now select another area, and repeat steps 3 to 5. Continue this process until you have colored the entire image.
