How to Plant Ornithogalum
There are many species of ornithogalum and they all tend to be easy growers that require minimal care. These plants thrive in areas that have warm, sunny weather. These plants are hardy and it's rare that they develop disease problems, mildew or black spot. Pest problems are also rare. The flowers have long lives and can last between four and six weeks depending on the species. Colors range from white to yellow, orange and red. Some ornithogalum species will have black spotted blooms. Does this Spark an idea?

Planting the Bulbs
-
1
Plant your ornithogalum bulbs in the fall in an area that drains well and that receives full sun. Any area that stands in water hours after a rainstorm should be avoided.
-
2
Dig holes that are six inches apart and three inches deep.
-
-
3
Place the bulbs in the holes with the pointy ends facing up. The bulbs are shaped like onions and the pointed ends are easy to determine.
-
4
Cover the bulbs with soil and water the area thoroughly.
-
5
Watch for plant growth to appear in late winter and flowers to develop in the spring. Water as needed.
-
6
Allow the foliage of the plant to die off naturally. Do not cut off yellowing and dying foliage as it's needed for the plant's nourishment so it will become a stronger producer during the next growing season.
