Online mapping tools make paper maps and measuring tools a thing of the past.

Google Maps is a web-based mapping application that provides interactive, detailed maps of the U.S. and Canada. Google Maps includes a variety of tools, including satellite maps, map scaling (up to street maps), route planning, travel directions, business locations and distance measurements.

Instructions

      Go to the Google Maps website.

      Click the "My Maps" tab.

      Click on "Distance Measurement Tool" under "Featured Content."

      Using the scale bar on the left side of the map area, zoom the map to the desired level of details (e.g. country, state, etc.).

      Place the cursor on the map. While holding the left mouse button, drag the map to the desired region.

      Click on the first point on the map, then on the second one. The distance between the points should be displayed on the left panel, in miles or feet.

    • 7

      Click the "Reset" button and repeat Step 6 (and Steps 4 and 5, if necessary) to take another measurement.

Tips & Warnings

  • Select the "Metric" radio button to display a distance in kilometers or meters.
