Because of the paperwork and tests required, there is no way to completely obtain a drivers' permit---or any type of license or identification card---online. However, using online tests and forms to prepare for getting a permit can reduce time spent at the DMV.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Necessary paperwork (varies by state) Proper identification (varies by state)

Prepare Online for Your Permit Test

  1. Step 1

The DMV offers a booklet for those studying for their permit tests, which is often available online. Check your state's DMV website to find the booklet, and if it is not available, pick one up from the closest DMV location. The book will contain practice test questions, like those you may see on the permit test. Many websites offer practice tests as well, so if you want some more practice, check online for an affordable test site.

Once you get your permit, online drivers' education classes are available, in place of classroom drivers' ed. Before signing up, check to make sure your state accepts the course, and to see if the course will get you an insurance discount like most classroom drivers' ed courses will.

  2. Step 2

Visit your state's DMV website to find out what paperwork and identification you will need when applying for your permit. If online forms are available, download them and fill them out at home to save time.

Be sure you have all the forms of identification you will need with you when you go to the DMV. Most states ask for a social security card and some form of identification, like a birth certificate. Your state's DMV website will have a list of acceptable forms of identification.

  3. Step 3

Once you've read the book and gotten your paperwork ready, go apply for your permit. Good luck!

Tips & Warnings
  • DMV.org is a comprehensive website that contains driving laws for every state. It's unofficial, but it gives good information, in addition to your state's official DMV site.
  • If you choose an online course to prepare for either your permit or your license, be sure it's legitimate. See if there are reviews of the course available, and check with the DMV to make sure it's an accepted course.
