How to Apply for a Permanent Resident Card

There are three ways in which you can legally apply for a permanent resident card so that you can enter and reside in the United States. Each way has its own set of requirements and you must follow each step precisely to apply for the card. The process takes time, but once you are granted a green card, you can have the same rights as someone that was born and raised in the country.

Meet and marry a legal resident of the country. The requirements for this step are strict. You must prove that you are married in every sense of the word. You must put your name on a waiting list and remain married to the same person until you are granted a green card. This step could take years. You will be checked on during the marriage to see if you are indeed living together as husband and wife or as a same-sex married couple if married in a state that recognizes same-sex marriages and performs them.

Add your name to the waiting lottery list. The list is made up of individuals wanting to obtain a permanent resident card. The list is long and only so many winners are chosen a year. You must have a high school diploma or at least two years of work history to apply for the lottery waiting list. A computer generates names from the list of applicants and those names are allowed to fill out the permanent resident card application.
