Writing your own biography gives you an opportunity to explore your past and to share about your experiences. In this article, I'll show you how you can organize this project and have fun with the process.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

First, you should take the time to plan and research your biography to make the process easier long-term.

You may have materials that can help you including photos, journals, school documents, and even home videos. While you may not including everything in the actual book, it's helpful to have items that will trigger your memories.

  2. Step 2

Decide how you want to structure your biography.

Do you have what you consider to be an overall theme in your life or obstacle that you have overcome? You can possibly make it the focus of your biography.

What many people do when they first start writing their biographies is list off facts of what happened but not the emotion or details of how it impacted them. There are some story elements used more often in fiction (sensory details, setting, etc.) that make non-fiction interesting without twisting the truth.

A simple way to structure a simple biography is to do one chapter per year or to do things in sections (early life, middle years, later years, etc.) A lot of this will be based on where you're at in life.

  3. Step 3

If you think you have an interesting story, consider publication.

The Writer's Digest series has listings of traditional publishers, and there are many legitimate self-publishers out there as well. (In general, scams will request you to pay huge sums of money for the opportunity to have your work published--avoid these situations, and always read and understand any agreement you're considering.)

Tips & Warnings
  • Read a lot of other people's biographies to get ideas on formatting and structure. You can incorporate aspects that you like and find ways of doing some things better if you have those comparisons.
