While it comes at a challenging time, writing thank you cards after a funeral is more of a time consuming task than a difficult one.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Organization is the key to writing thank you notes. The funeral director can be very helpful in keeping track of notes that come with flowers shipped directly to the home. You will want to keep track of any items that are shipped directly to your home so you can send out thank you notes.

  2. Step 2

Many funeral homes will offer the option of ordering funeral thank you notes. People do choose to economize and buy basic thank you notes to meet the same need. Most people are looking to see their gift acknowledged, more expensive notes rarely add to the acknowledgement. If you are on a budget, consider cutting your expenses here.

  3. Step 3

This is something family and friends can help you with if you just can not face the task. Make sure there is a list with the addresses and the items sent and do not hesitate to have others help you if you need it. The task can be challenging to face. Try dividing the task among family members. This is a time for people to help each other.

  4. Step 4

Do not panic, you do not need to send out thank you notes to all the people who attended and signed the guest book. You are only responding to those who sent flowers and gifts. You may also wish to thank those who performed services or helped you prepare for the funeral. Each situation is different so you will want to consider what additional notes should be written.

  5. Step 5

While approaching the task may seem overwhelming, getting it behind you can help you move forward with your grief. It will not be hanging over you. The notes do not need to be long or complicated. Simple notes are appropriate.

Tips & Warnings
  • Have your funeral home keep a list or the cards of flower shipped to the funeral home.
  • Keep track of the items shipped to your home.
  • Consider your budget when deciding on what to spend on thank you notes.
  • Do get family to help.
  • Do not let yourself get overwhelmed by the process.
