Stain your Deck
Stain your Deck

Staining your deck is definitely a project that most homeowners can handle as a weekend project. In this article I will show you the proper way to prepare your deck surface and apply the stain. Good luck on your project!

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Figure out if your deck was previously stained or sealed. To do this use the "sprinkle test", sprinkle some water on your deck. If the water beads up then you will need to chemical strip the deck. If the water soaks in, your deck is ready to receive stain.

  2. Step 2

Clean your deck. The best way to do this is with a pressure washer and deck cleaner. Use a stiff bristled brush and deck cleaner to scrub the surface, then pressure wash your deck to remove all residue.

  3. Step 3

Protect the area surrounding your deck. Cover your siding using painters tape and plastic, wet all surrounding vegetation, and cover landscaping around deck.

  4. Step 4

Apply the stain. First stain any railings and spindles using a natural bristle paint brush. The stain will tend to drip and run on the spindles, so avoid putting too much stain on these areas.

  5. Step 5

Stain deck floor. There are several ways to accomplish this. Hand brush, paint roller, airless sprayer, or garden sprayer. I prefer the garden sprayer for most decks. For this use the pump-style pressurized garden sprayer. Fill the sprayer pot, pump and spray.

  6. Step 6

Spray a few deck boards at a time 4-5, then use a paint roller to roll-out the stain and work it in to any grooves, cracks, and gaps.

  7. Step 7

Allow your deck plenty of dry time, 24 to 48 hours, before walking on it. Dry time will depend on air temperature and humidity.

  8. Step 8

    Enjoy your beautiful deck.

Tips & Warnings
  • Check the weather, if your expecting rain - don't stain.
  • Avoid applying stain in direct sunlight during the hottest part of the day. Flash drying can causes a blotchy finished appearance as well as roller lap marks. Overcast days are the best days for staining.
  • If you determine a chemical stripper is necessary, be sure to wear proper protection. Including thick clothing, eye protection and rubber gloves.
