Informing someone of a human shortcoming can be tricky especially when you are trying to get around hurting their feelings.

Herein I provide suggestions how to get around this sensitive problem.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Recently, I listened soundlessly while others described a situation where someone had bad breath however they didn't know how to advise the person without him becoming hurt.

This allowed me to think how I would handle the problem and I gave my ideas to them accordingly. One way I suggested is to set out some of those delicious candy after dinner mints. You know, the retro-style mints that came in various shades of color: I think they are very good and the mint may solve the problem.

Also, ever so delicately everyone picks up some mints for him or herself in front of this person: hopefully the saying "monkey sees monkey does" will apply to the situation.

  2. Step 2

Also, different individuals could pull out a pack of gum and take a piece and then offer this person a piece as well. This doesn't suggest anything except that you would like to share some gum.

  3. Step 3

I also suggested they could set out at work or wherever this person happened to be some of those green mint with chocolate hard candies or those regular round peppermint candies that you allow to melt in your mouth during Christmas. You might mix a couple butterscotch candies into the sampling so it doesnt' look apparent as to what you are trying to affect. Hopefully, the person will not only just sample the butterscotch they will also enjoy some of the peppermint and minty chocolate hard candies as well.

  4. Step 4

Everyone might try brushing after lunch. The person may feel left out if they are the only one not engaging in the ritual. However, I'd be careful how I employed this technique as it may appear a bit strange if you've known the person for awhile and all of a sudden everyone took to brushing.

The mint approach I believe would be my first course of action.

Tips & Warnings
  • I advise not to make your frustration obvious as this may only make matters worse. If the person goes on the defensive you may never solve the problem.
