Instructions

    • 1

Research types of paving stones. Browse home improvement or garden stores to determine the size, color and shape of stone you prefer. Get ideas for designs you can execute, such as herringbone patterns or circular styles. Choose a design based on the look of your home, the space you will fill and the ease of assembly.

    • 2

Measure your walkway space. Determine the height, width and length of your project and measure the overall square footage. Use the measurements to decide how many pavers to purchase. Or hire a contractor to take the measurements.

    • 3

Obtain estimates from several contractors before you hire one to build the walkway.

    • 4

Build the walkway yourself. For a path through the lawn, simply dig spaces for the pavers and lay them into the grass. For a more complicated design, be prepared to excavate, lay a sand and gravel base, and lay the pavers in a pattern. Sweep sand between the pavers and apply a sealer according to manufacturer recommendations.
