You can help your child meet a homework deadline by following several basic steps. School, peers and homework can cause a great deal of stress in children. Learning how to help your child meet a homework deadline will enable them to meet deadlines later in their adult lives. Your child doesn’t have to feel isolated and alone when it comes to homework. Working together as a team will ensure the homework is done with the minimal amount of stress.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Keep composed, calm and cool. It can be frustrating. Your child lets you know a homework assignment deadline is tomorrow. Remaining calm will help the homework process go smoother.

  2. Step 2

Write down a plan of action for the homework task. Help your child organize how to get the homework done in time for the deadline.

  3. Step 3

Write a shopping list for needed supplies. Are there items and materials needed to complete the project? Have the child help you make a shopping list and purchase the supplies as soon as possible.

  4. Step 4

Supervise the child during the homework assignment. Provide guidance, support and encouragement. Diffuse any issues that may arise and help the child find a workable solution.

  5. Step 5

Get some rest. After the homework deadline is met, get some rest. Everyone will be tired from the hard work and the stress.

  6. Step 6

Discuss the homework deadline with the child, when the project is over. Talk about the need to plan ahead for projects. Offer praise for a job well-done. However, remind the child to plan for the future and not make a habit of waiting until the last minute for homework assignments.

Tips & Warnings
  • If your child procrastinates about homework assignments on a regular basis, explain consequences (such as no phone, no TV) and don’t allow the behavior to continue.
