Turkish coffee is a delicious - and difficult to make - drink, perfect for a little pick-me-up. Although it's not the easiest to make, once you get the hang of it, you'll have to fend off friends in need of an energy (and caffeine) boost!

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Very finely ground coffee
  • Turkish coffee pot
  1. Step 1

Put one cupful of cold water in a Turkish coffee pot per desired drink. Ideally, the water should go up to the narrowest part of the coffee pot, leaving only the very top portion free. Note that it is important to use a Turkish coffee pot (also known as cevze/jev-zay, ibrik, or briki).

  2. Step 2

Add a bit of sugar to the water, if desired.

  3. Step 3

Spoon 1 heaping teaspoonful per cup of finely ground coffee beans on top of the water. The Turkish coffee bean grind is the finest grind - it should be a powdery consistency. If desired, add a few black pods from a cardamom seed before the grind.

  4. Step 4

On the lowest possible heat, slowly heat the water. After the top starts foaming, but before it boils over, remove the pot from heat and let the foam settle.

  5. Step 5

Place the coffee pot back on the flame and repeat twice more.

  6. Step 6

Quickly pour the Turkish coffee into cups, preserving as much foam as possible. Traditionally, smaller cups were used, but any cup you want to use is fine.

Tips & Warnings
  • Watch the coffee carefully, as it can boil over very quickly
