How to Recycle Plastic Bottle Caps

About 50 million plastic bottles are sold in the US every year. While many of these are recycled, the bottle caps are not accepted by most recycling centers. There is now a way to recycle any rigid plastic bottle caps. It does not matter if these caps are from water bottles or other bottles such as those from shampoo, detergent, etc. To recycle these caps, you must mail them in to Aveda so it is best to collect caps as a group before recycling.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Decide on an organization to approach about beginning a plastic bottle cap recycling program. Schools are an excellent choice. If you are not connected with a school, then approach your house of worship (church, mosque, synagogue, etc.), place of business, apartment complex, or a non-profit group you are a member of such as the scouts.

  2. Step 2

Once you have permission and "buy in" from the powers that be, set up a recycling bin in a prominent location. If it is a school project, you may want to set up a bin in each classroom and arrange for a contest between the classes to see who can collect the most caps.

  3. Step 3

Send the caps to Aveda. Call 1.877.AVEDA09 or e-mail capcollection@aveda.com to receive 20 postage paid mailing labels. Call UPS for pickup when you have collected several caps. Aveda prefers to receive boxes measuring 17”L x 15”W x 12”D.
