1
Cast into shallow waters. Pike prefer shallow water with heavy weeds where it can set up ambush attacks on its prey.
-
2
Allow the fly to drop through the shallow water. On the retrieve, change the retrieval speed and the direction so the fly lure appears to be alive. Natural yet erratic action will draw the attention of the pike.

3
If the water is shallow enough and you can see the pike swimming about, pay attention to the pike's response to the fly lure. If the pike appears to be ignoring the lure, change the retrieval speed, action speed and the depth of the lure.

When you find the fly presentation that sparks interest in the pike, keep with it until you get a bite. The fish will line up with and swim after the fly. If the pike swims after the fly lure but then does not bite, let the fly sink to the bottom and then create some action. Pikes tend to return and complete attacks.

After the pike strikes the fly, slowly pull in the line. Allow the pike some line. The pike is going to fight hard, and the battle is going to last awhile.
