Find Registered Sex Offenders

Moving into a new home is hard enough without worrying about what your new neighbors are like -- and not just whether your families will get along. All states are required to develop methods of sharing information with the public about the location and criminal history of sex offenders. All 50 have online sex offender registries, which are searchable databases that allow residents to find registered sex offenders in their neighborhood or in areas where they may consider moving.

Instructions

    • 1

Go to the National Sex Offenders Public Website, nsopw.gov.

    • 2

Select your state and review the disclaimer and/or terms of use that you must read and agree to before you can use the registry. These conditions explain that using the registry to find sex offenders with the intention to harass, intimidate assault, or otherwise harm or contact the registered offender or his family members in an unwelcome manner can and will lead to criminal prosecution.

Accept the terms, and you will be brought to the registry search page.

    • 3

Search for registered sex offenders by first and/or last name, county, town or city, and/or ZIP Code. Each state’s list might be arranged differently or offer different options. If you are trying to find a particular sex offender, then search by name, or by address, if you don't know the name. If you are trying to find out about registered sex offenders living in your area or in an area you are thinking about moving to, use the county/town search options.

Look at your results. Different state's lists may yield information including name, address and description.
