Step 1
Card from www.greetincardUniverse.com/fairygirlcardsStart off by keeping an idea notebook. That way whenever you think of a great saying or see something that gives you an idea for a card, you won't forget it. It might help to have pages for separate occasions, such as "Thank You", "I'm sorry" or "Husband Birthday". Just having these categories written out can help get your ideas flowing.
-
Step 2
Visit a card store and look at the sections that are missing the most cards...the most popular ones. Are they humorous? Are they pictures with just a few words or are they comprised of mostly text? Start to learn the trends and market.
-
Step 3
It always helps to have a drawing or picture to go with your text. If you don't have talent in this area, try to find a friend or relative who can collaborate with you.
-
Step 4
Now you need to sell your ideas. The way I have had the most success is on Greeting Card Universe, (see this ehow:http://www.ehow.com/how_5111314_make-money-greeting-card-universe.html) This is a POD site that lets you set up your own store for free and then pays you a percentage for each card sold. Zazzle and Cafepress are similar sites.
-
Step 5
There are several greeting card companies that will pay a one time fee for original card ideas, please note these are far more difficult to break into. The best way to find these companies is to subscribe to the Writer's Market at www.writersmarket.com. They have a great list of companies along with their submission guidelines. When you submit to these companies, only send your best work and follow their submission guidelines to the letter.
