How to Sign Up for the Do Not Call List

Telemarketers have long been an annoyance, especially when they make a habit of calling very early in the morning or during dinner. For years, it seemed like consumers had no way to fight back against the barrage of unwanted calls; asking the telemarketer to remove you from the list got you a prompt click and a dial tone. Thankfully, the U.S. Government addressed these concerns in 2003 when they initiated the Do Not Call Registry. Consumers can now sign up for the Do Not Call List, and effectively remove their names and telephone numbers from the list of numbers telemarketers contact.

Instructions

    • 1

Visit the official website at: donotcall.gov. Click on "Register A Phone Number" on the left-side menu. You will be directed to a form to complete for registration. You can add up to 3 telephone numbers at a time. Fill in the 3-digit area code in the first box and the 7-digit phone number in the second box. Enter your e-mail address. Click "Submit."

    • 2

Check your e-mail and click on the registration link you received from the Do Not Call website. If you do not click the registration link with 72 hours, your application will be discarded and you will need to sign up again.

    • 3

Sign up by phone by calling from the phone number that you want to register. Call 1-888-382-1222 and follow the prompts to register your number. Do not hang up until you hear the confirmation prompt stating your number has been added to the list.

Tips & Warnings

  • While your number will be added to the registry by the next day after signing up, it can take up to 31 days for telemarketers to remove you from their list and cease contacting you.

  • You cannot register business numbers or fax numbers with the Do Not Call Registry.
