Step 1
Get the Right CutBuy a good cut of steak. Cheap meat will taste cheap regardless of how you cook it. Pay a little extra for a steak you will enjoy. Ribeye steaks are the most flavorful though some people prefer T-bones and Porterhouse steaks. Make sure that you buy a cut that is at least one inch thick.
-
Step 2
Rub with Olive OilRub both sides of the steak with a generous amount of olive oil. This will help the spices attach to the steak and will give it a beautiful brown color. It will also prevent the steak from sticking to the pan.
-
Step 3
Salt and PepperSeason the steak with salt and pepper. If you are a snob for flavor use sea salt and fresh ground pepper. If you bought a nice cut of meat this is the only seasoning that your steak requires. Anything else will mask the taste of the steak.
-
Step 4
BroilMake sure that the steak is at room temperature before putting it in the oven. A cold steak will not cook properly. Leave a refridgerated steak out for at least a half hour before cooking it. Place the steak right under the broiler for three minutes per side or until the outside is browned. Next, drop it down to a lower rack and let it cook for 10 more minutes for rare, 12 for medium rare, and 15 for medium well. It is a crime to cook a steak more than that.
-
Step 5
Cut Against GrainAllow the steak to sit at room temperature for at least five minutes before cutting into it. This allows the juices to settle and flavors to enhance. Cut the steak against the grain. This loosens the fibers and provides more tender meat. Enjoy!
