Preparing for a speech is very important. It helps with your delivery and your nerves. Note cards are a great way to prepare for that important speech.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Note cards
  • Pen
  • Material for speech
  1. Step 1

Get out any material that you will need to prepare your speech. Remember that these note cards are only meant to be used as a reference tool. You are not writing out an entire speech on the cards. Only write down main ideas and have only one main idea on each note card. Put the main idea at the top of the card. Highlight it if you need to draw attention to it. Then write a few points under the main idea that will help move your speech along. Use only words and phrases. Do not fill up your cards with sentences. Write large enough so that you can see easily.

  2. Step 2

Only write on one side of the note card. You do not want the audience to see any of your writing. That would look unprofessional. It also makes you look organized. Numbering the note cards can also help with organization.

  3. Step 3

As you use each card, place it behind the cards. You want to hold the cards loosely and comfortably. Do not grip the cards. It can ruin some of the words and also it makes you look nervous. Hold them steady. Do not tap them on the podium or play with them.

  4. Step 4

Most of all, practice. Having note cards as a reference tool can really help. Do not read off of them though. You should practice using your note cards. Just glance at them to help your speech along. Practicing your speech will help you feel more comfortable and it will keep you from relying on your cards.
