How to Write and Format a Resume

Writing a resume is one of the most important aspects of procuring a new job. Although you want your resume to stand out, your resume should be formatted properly or else it likely will be glossed over or just thrown out.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Centered at the top of your page have your name, and below it contact information. (including your address, phone numbers, email, etc.)

  2. Step 2

    Objective.
Have your objective specific to the job or position you are applying for. Dress it up nicely with a few finely chosen words, but don't make this too long, as your potential employer does not want to read a whole essay in this section.

  3. Step 3

    Qualifications.
List your qualifications here, and make sure to list things that will make you seem more desirable to obtain the position you are applying for.

  4. Step 4

    Education.
This section is obvious. Don't forget to list what you are currently doing if you are currently in school or are taking online classes, night school, etc.

  5. Step 5

    Experience.
List previous jobs, including the company name, your position, and dates employed by the company. At the bottom of each, list responsibilities you carried out on the job.

  6. Step 6

    References.
Make sure to actually list references. In the past, a "references available by request" at the bottom was acceptable, but not anymore. Employers want a quick reference of people they can readily contact. Don't fill up pages and pages with references, but list enough exceptional references. It would be a good idea to let some of the people know you are using them as references if you can.

Tips & Warnings
  • Pay attention to spelling, and grammar.
  • Either use ALL full sentences, or ALL fragments, but either way, be consistent and do not switch back and forth throughout.
