Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • transportation
  • money
  1. Step 1

If you are having dental pain or need an extraction, and live in Indianapolis, Indiana, go to the Regenstrief Health Center, which has an Emergency Dental clinic.

They are located at 1050 Wishard Blvd, Indianapolis, IN.
Regenstrief Health Center is attached to Wishard Hospital. Their phone number is 317.630.8004.

When you arrive at the hospital, tell them you want the dental clinic.

  2. Step 2

The Regenstrief Health Center is shared by the IU Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Program, General Practice Dental Residency Program, and IU's undergraduate dental students.

  3. Step 3

If you do not have a car, Indianapolis has a bus service called IndyGo and you can catch a bus to Wishard Hospital. Bus number 5 and 10 both make stops at Wishard Hospital. http://www.indygo.net/system_at_a_glance.htm

  4. Step 4

The Dental Clinic opens at 8:00am. You want to be sure to get there early because they may have a cut off time if they receive too many people. http://www.iusd.iupui.edu/Depts/PS/Emergency.aspx

  5. Step 5

When you arrive at the Dental clinic, you will fill out some paper work and if you are a Marion County resident, you will be expected to pay $65.00 upfront before any procedure is done. You will be billed for any other charges.

  6. Step 6

They do accept private insurance so you may just need to pay your dental copay.

**If you live outside of Marion County, you will have to pay the full cost of services rendered that day.**

  7. Step 7

You can expect to be in the clinic about 3 hours because they get a lot of people.

  8. Step 8

The first time you are called to go back into the clinic, you will be taken back to have your blood pressure read and to have and X-ray of the tooth that is bothering you. Try and remain calm because if your blood pressure it too high, you may have to wait until it comes down, or you may not be seen at all and have to come back another day.

Try and remain calm. It can be a scary thing getting a tooth extracted, especially if you are alone. Bring someone with you so that you won't be too anxious.

  9. Step 9

After your X-ray and blood pressure reading, you will be sent back to the waiting room to wait to be seen by the dentist.

  10. Step 10

You will be called back into the exam room again when the dentist is ready to see you. When you get back into the exam room, the dentist will talk to you about your X-ray and give you their recommendation. Usually if anyone is coming to the clinic, it is a dental emergency and your are going to get your tooth extracted. If the tooth can be saved, they will let you know. They do not do root canals at this clinic. You will have to make an appointment with one of the IU dentist or go to a dentist of your choice to do the root canal.

  11. Step 11

If you decide to get your tooth extracted, a dentist will extract your tooth. Try to remain calm and let the dentist know if you feel pain. They do put you to sleep, if you want to be put to sleep.

  12. Step 12

Once your tooth is pulled, you will sit there for about 30 minutes biting down on a gauze pad. Once the bleeding is minimal, you will be free to go. They will prescribe you medication to help you feel better.

  13. Step 13

If at any times you have a concern about your tooth or pain, you can call the dentist on call at 317.274.5000. Don't be afraid to use the number. They will answer any questions you have. I used that number 2 times while healing.
