You can create interesting patterns in glass by cutting out pieces of ceramic fiber paper, placing it under glass and then firing it in a glass fusing kiln. With this technique, you use gravity to create a relief in warm glass. This tutorial will explain how to kiln carve glass using ceramic fiber paper.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • ceramic fiber paper
  • glass
  • glass kiln
  1. Step 1

Sketch out the design you want to kiln carve into glass.

  2. Step 2

Use a craft knife to cut the ceramic fiber paper into the shapes needed to complete your design. Ceramic fiber paper comes in a variety of different thickness, giving different degrees of depth to your warm glass relief. You purchase ceramic fiber paper where glass fusing supplies are sold.

  3. Step 3

Fire the cut ceramic fiber paper to 1290 degrees Fahrenheit in your glass fusing kiln to burn out the binder in the paper. Pre-firing the ceramic fiber paper will prevent a haze from developing when the ceramic fire paper is fired under the glass. Be sure to fire in a well ventilated space.

  4. Step 4

Arrange the fired ceramic fiber paper on the prepared kiln shelf in the pattern you designed. Once you are pleased with the arrangement, place the shelf inside the glass fusing kiln.

  5. Step 5

Select a single sheet of glass. In our example, we used a piece of clear bullseye glass but most glass can be used. Keep in mind that clear and transparent colored glasses tend to release easier from the ceramic fiber papers than will opal glass. In addition, fired glass will release easier from the ceramic fiber papers than will other glass.

  6. Step 6

Clean the glass with glass cleaner. Dry the glass and place the sheet of glass over the ceramic fiber paper pattern.

  7. Step 7

Close the glass fusing kiln and fire using the following glass fusing schedule as a guide:

Ramp ºF/Hr Target temperature Hold for
    1 400 1260 20
    1 400 1450 10
    1 Full 950 15
    1 150 700 0

Tips & Warnings
  • To reuse your ceramic fiber paper design, spray the paper with a hardener such as colloidal silica and pre-fire the piece to 1290 degrees Fahrenheit. After firing, spray the hardened paper with shelf primer as you would a mold. The piece should be firm enough to reuse several times.
  • You can kiln carve when you slump glass by simply arranging the ceramic fiber paper pattern in the slump mold and firing following a slump schedule.
  • Always wear a respirator designed to filter out particulates when working with ceramic fiber paper.
  • Wear gloves and avoid contact with skin when working with ceramic fiber paper.
  • Be sure your kiln is in a well ventilated space when the ceramic fiber paper is burning off the binder.
  • Wear eye goggles with IR and UV protection when looking into a hot kiln.
  • Never leave a kiln unattended when firing.
  • Always take fire safety precautions.
