Understanding how to set up a rabbit trap is very important if you are ever stranded and need a way to catch food, or if you are hunting and want to catch your own food. The simplest way to catch a rabbit without weapons is by building a noose trap, or a rabbit snare. This procedure is simple to set up, but requires a lot of patience, skill and observation. It is also important to set the trap up in an area that is highly frequented by rabbits.

Things You'll Need:

  • Two to four sturdy sticks, at least 5 inches tall Durable cord or wire Tree trunk or large thick stick
  1. Step 1

Observe your surroundings carefully. You need to find a high traffic area for rabbits to set up your trap. Focus on areas around water, then look for small pathways that are slightly cleared of lower brush close to the ground and burrow holes that a rabbit could squeeze through. The ultimate location to set up the trap is directly outside a burrow hole's entrance, but if this isn't possible, pick a place for the trap along a path where you see rabbit tracks.

  2. Step 2

Find a 3.5 foot length of durable cord, like tent or sleeping bag cords, or shoelaces. Use wire as a last resort. The cord can be longer, but must be at least 3.5 feet.

  3. Step 3

Tie a careful slipknot in the cord to create a noose. It needs to be large enough for a rabbit's ears and head to slide through, but not so big that the entire rabbit can fit through. A good length is about 4 inches in diameter.

  4. Step 4

Find a tree trunk within 2 feet of the area in which you want to set the trap. Tie the free end of the cord securely around the tree trunk's bottom, wrapping it around once. If there isn't a tree trunk close enough, use a thick stick that is at least 5 inches long. Stick it deep into the ground a few feet away from where you want to set the noose. Secure the cord to the stick about 2 inches above the ground.

  5. Step 5

Find two 5- to 6-inch-tall sticks and plant them firmly in the ground at the sides of the rabbit hole (or on either side of the path where you are setting the noose). Insert them at an angle so that they are leaning inward toward the rabbit hole or path. There should be about a 6-inch space between the sticks.

  6. Step 6

Make sure the cord can stretch from the tree to the two sticks planted in the ground. Set each side of the noose on or around the two sticks in the ground. Push out the sticks a little bit so the noose is tightened and stays set up. This is where the rabbit will walk toward, thus getting its head stuck in the noose and pulling it tighter. If necessary, use a third stick to anchor the noose from another angle.

  7. Step 7

Hide or wait for a rabbit sighting. Try to observe for a bit to see if you need to set the trap up in a different place. Wait for a rabbit to walk through the trap and get caught.
