Sachets are great to make as gifts

For more than 500 years sachets have been used to help keep clothing smelling fresh. Scented with your favorite perfume or potpourri, they are easy to make and personalize with a fragrance that you enjoy. Sachets can be placed in drawers or hung in closets or other small spaces, and can even help to keep away insects that enjoy munching on sweaters. These sachets also make functional, sweet-smelling gifts.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Fabric Fabri-Tac fabric glue Scissors Cotton fiberfill or potpourri Lace, ribbon or other decorations
  1. Step 1

Cut your fabric into 2 equal squares. Most often these sachet pillows are small - approximately 4 inches square, but they can be made any size you choose depending upon your application.

  2. Step 2

Place thin lines of fabri-tac glue on three edges of one piece of fabric. Carefully lay the second piece of fabric over the first, making sure the edges line up. Press down firmly so that the glue adheres. Put aside and allow glue to set.

  3. Step 3

Fill the pillow with potpourri or cotton fiberfill you have sprinkled with your favorite scent or essential oil. You want the pillow to be full, but just enough so that you can still close the opening securely. A 4 to 5 inch pillow will take about 1/2 cup of potpourri.

  4. Step 4

Run a line of glue along the opening on the bottom piece of fabric. Line the top piece up with the bottom so the edges meet. Press firmly so glue adheres. Put aside and allow to dry.

  5. Step 5

Measure and cut 4 pieces of ribbon or lace to the size of each edge of the pillow. Run a line of glue along the top edge and carefully place the ribbon on the fabric so that 1/2 of the ribbon is on the top and the second half will fold over the edge. Press firmly. Run glue along the back edge of the fabric and line up the second half of the ribbon over the edge. Press firmly. Continue until all four edges are covered with lace or ribbon. Apply other decorations as desired.

Tips & Warnings
  • Cut a 6 -8 inch piece of ribbon and sew onto the center of one edge of the pillow - forming a loop. This will allow you to hang your sachet in a closet or on a hook. Add rosemary or cedar to your sachet to prevent bugs from entering a closet or drawer.
