How to Make a Clay Bottle Cap
Making clay bottle caps is a great way to recycle all those bottle caps you have been holding on to for the perfect project. They make wonderful refrigerator magnets, lapel pins and barrettes, and only require a small amount of clay, no matter how intricate your design. Clay bottle caps make a quick and easy class art project, or a birthday party craft. Decorate your clay bottle cap with a design like a ladybug.

Roll a 1-inch ball of green clay in your hands. Insert the ball into the back of the bottle cap. Press the clay to fill the inside of the bottle cap to the edges. Slice off the excess overflow by running the knife horizontally across the bottle cap's edges.

2
Turn the bottle cap with the top-side up. Flatten a small amount of green clay using a rolling pin until you achieve a coin-sized thickness. Drape the clay over the top of the bottle cap. Cut around the top of the bottle cap using the craft knife. The end result will look like a disk on top of the bottle cap. Press it lightly to hold, and smooth the edges with your fingers.

Roll a pea-sized red ball of clay and press it flat between your fingers. Set it on one half of the green disk and press to hold. This is the body of the ladybug. Roll a black ball half the size of a pea and press it flat between your fingers. Set it on the other half of the green disk with the edge touching the body, and press to hold. This is the ladybug's head.

Roll two BB-sized white balls and press them flat. Lay them side by side on the head and press to hold for the eyes. Roll four black balls half the size of a BB and press them flat between your fingers. Place them on the ladybug's body for spots. Roll two more black balls the same size and press them flat. Place them on the white eyes as pupils. Press to hold.

Place the clay bottle cap in a 275 degree F oven for 15 minutes. Allow the clay bottle cap to cool. Turn the bottle cap over. Apply household cement to a magnet or pin back and center on the back of the bottle cap. If making a barrette, make two more bottle caps, apply household cement to the barrette blank and set the bottle caps on the barrette.
