Adobe Photoshop CS3 supplies users with a variety of filters to enhance the design of an image. Within these filters are render effects. Unlike the other filters, render effects do not rely on the image when applying an effect. Rather, they create an effect that is applied on top of the image. This tutorial will explain how to use the render effects in Adobe Photoshop CS3 by giving some very basic real-life examples. Combining these render effects with other filters and effects can create some stunning designs.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Adobe Photoshop CS3 or higher
  1. Step 1

Render a cloud effect on text. The cloud filter fills the layer with a cloud effect. You can use this effect to create clouds inside your text. Type the text that you want to look like clouds. Create a new layer above the text layer. Select "Filter>Render>Clouds." Make sure that the cloud layer is selected. Select "Layer>Create Clipping Mask."

  2. Step 2

Render a wood background. Select "Filter>Render>Fibers." Adjust the "Fibers" settings until they have the desired wood-grain look. The example image uses a variance of 15 and a strength of 50. Select "Layer>New Adjustment Layer>Hue/Saturation..." Select "Colorize" and adjust the hue, saturation, and lightness to the desired wood color.

  3. Step 3

Render a lens flare on a diamond ring. Open the image with the ring. Create a new layer above the image. Fill the layer with black. Select "Screen" from the drop-down menu. Select "Filter>Render>Lens Flare." Adjust the brightness to the desired size of flare. You can click inside the "Flare Center" to position the flare; however, with the new layer, you can move the flare around later. Select "OK" and position the flare onto the ring by moving the layer. Note that you cannot adjust a lens flare after it is added to a layer.

  4. Step 4

Render lighting effects. Use the lighting effects to add professional lighting to an image. Select "Filter>Render>Lighting effects." Adjust the lighting effects as desired. Increase or decrease the area of the light by moving the outside handles on the eclipse. Move the center handle on the eclipse to reposition the light. Drag additional lights onto the image from the "Light Bulb" button.
