How to Properly Clean a Pool Filter

Cleaning your pool's filter is essential in maintaining a healthy pool. When the filter is clean, the water will remain clean and clear for an enjoyable swimming pool experience. Whether you use a cartridge filter or a diatomaceous earth filter, also known as a DE filter, the process for cleaning can be done on your own whenever it is necessary. A cartridge filter requires cleaning whenever it appears dirty and should be checked often. A DE filter can be cleaned when the seasons change. Follow these instructions to clean out the filter in your pool.

Clean a Cartridge Filter

1. Remove the cartridge filter and use a water hose, without the spray nozzle, to rinse the cartridge filter.

2. Set the filter in a sunny area and allow it to air dry.

3. Knock loose dirt and grime from the filter with a stiff bristled paintbrush.

4. Mix six parts water and one part pool chlorine in a large bucket. Lower the filter into the bucket and replace the bucket's lid. Let the filter soak for up to five days for maximum results. This kills microorganisms in the filter. Soak for one to three days if you do not have time to leave it for five.

5. Rinse the filter in a bucket of clean water by submerging it repeatedly and pulling it out quickly. Let the filter air dry in a sunny spot, and use the stiff bristled brush to knock away debris.

6. Mix 10 parts water and one part muriatic acid in a large bucket and allow the filter to soak in the solution until it stops bubbling.

7. Rinse the filter with clean water and allow it to dry before replacing it. It is now clean and ready to be used in the pool.

Clean a DE Filter

8. Turn the pump off and open the pressure vent. Roll the hose out.

9. Turn off the power for the multiport valve part of the filter and switch the multiport valve to "Backwash." Turn the pump and valve back on and allow the water to run until it is clear. Turn the pump off.

10. Turn the valve off and switch to "Rinse." Turn the valve back on and run the pump again for about 20 seconds.

11. Repeat Steps 2 and 3 until the sight glass is clear. This is located on the multiport valve.

12. Roll the hose back in and switch the valve to "Filter." Turn the power back on and the filter is ready to use with the pool.
