Chess can be a fun yet frustrating game to play. It can also be very confusing if you have never played or watched chess before. As a beginner, you most likely will be unsure about how certain pieces can move on a chess board, why a small clock is positioned next to chess board and how you win a chess match. Using a combination of text, Internet and in-person resources can help you learn more about chess.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Read up on the game of chess. Visit your local library to find numerous books dealing with chess. Another good resource is "Chess is Fun," by United States Correspondence Chess Champion Jon Edwards. Edwards outlines the basics of the game of chess in a way beginners can understand.

  2. Step 2

Contact a local chess club. These clubs will hold meetings and also sponsor chess events in your area. You won't have to necessarily join the club to attend a meeting or speak with a member of the chess club.

  3. Step 3

Attend chess events. Just as with any sport, watching live chess matches will help you learn more about chess. You can also talk about chess with experienced players while at these events. You might even be able to play a few games of chess while at a meet-up or similar event.

  4. Step 4

Join an online chess forum and/or game. These websites allow you to play chess against players who are at the same level as you. You can also watch games between two chess players. Watching two very good chess players face off against one another can be an excellent way for you to learn the game of chess. Individuals with a Yahoo! account may want to take part in Yahoo! Chess.

Tips & Warnings
  • Another way you can learn or advance your chess skills is to hire a chess coach. A coach can offer one-on-one lessons and teach you everything you need to know about the game of chess. Inquire about obtaining a coach at a local chess club.
