Making your own home movies on a PC has never been easier or more accessible. The Microsoft Movie Maker application is included free with the Windows XP operating system, and updates are available through the Microsoft website. With digital photos and/or digital movie clips, Microsoft Movie Maker provides drag-and-drop ease to place and arrange your images and videos along a time line. Between the clips on the time line, you can add transitions, and you can even add audio (music or voice) throughout the video or during specific clips.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Windows XP or newer Microsoft Movie Maker (included with Windows XP or newer)

How to Make Movies on a PC

  1. Step 1

    Open Windows Movie Maker.

  2. Step 2

Import media (video clips, photos, images). Do this by using the import features or simply locate the files you want in Windows Explorer, then drag and drop them onto the collections area.

  3. Step 3

With video clips and pictures available under the collection, drag and drop each item into spaces on the storyboard.

  4. Step 4

Open the available transitions in Windows Movie Maker, then drag and drop transitions into place along the time line.

  5. Step 5

Click the button to show the time line, so audio and titles can be added to the movie.

  6. Step 6

When arrangement, transitions, audio and text have been added to the storyline, save the project.

  7. Step 7

Test the video playback to make sure the movie looks and sounds the way you want it to. If not, edit problem areas. If it plays correctly, save the movie file.

  8. Step 8

Select options through the "Save Movie Wizard." Once the movie is made, you can close Windows Movie Maker and share your movie with family, friends or co-workers.

Tips & Warnings
  • Browse to your final movie file and test it outside of Windows Movie Maker. With this file, you are free to email, post online, incorporate in other videos, burn to DVD and more.
