How to Incorporate a Non-Profit Ministry
By incorporating your nonprofit ministry, you can give it the power it needs to continue long after you are gone. Incorporating can also be used as a tool to protect your own assets should your ministry ever be sued or encounter legal problems and also help to reduce the amount of tax that your ministry pays to the IRS.

Determine what corporation status you would like to obtain for your ministry. For example, Sole or LLC?

Select a corporate name for your nonprofit ministry. Be sure that the name is unique and not being utilized by another organization within your city. You can find out whether or not a name is already incorporated by contacting your Secretary of State's department.

Obtain an EIN for your ministry through the IRS. You can obtain an EIN immediately by going to the IRS website and completing the online form. When applying for an EIN indicate on the form that you are a nonprofit organization.

Establish a physical address for your ministry. If you do not have a physical building yet and are conducting ministry meetings at your home address, you can use the address you are holding your meetings at. A physical address is required in order to incorporate.

Develop a board of directors for your ministry. The board of directors must consist of at least two to three individuals in a leadership position. For example, adviser, treasurer, media relations, etc...

Create constitution and bylaws for your ministry. The constitution and bylaws should include what the ministry's beliefs are, how the ministry will function, mission and outreach.

Create your Articles of Incorporation. The Articles of Incorporation is a set of rules that your ministry will use to govern your ministry.

Submit your Articles of Incorporation along with the appropriate filing fees to your Secretary of State. Afterward, you will be provided with an official certificate, bearing your state's seal, acknowledging your ministry as being incorporated.
