Step 1
Restart your computer and wait for text to begin displaying on the screen. This text will be showing the start-up process and details of the computer. During this time, press the "F8" key on your keyboard multiple times. You want to do this before the Windows XP Professional logo screen appears.

Enter the Windows XP Professional Advanced Options menu, which will occur automatically when clicking on F8 multiple times. Use the directional arrow buttons on your keyboard to select "Safe Mode," and then press "Enter" on your keyboard.

Wait for the computer to load up in Safe Mode. When you are finished in Safe Mode, restart the computer normally and do not hit any keys when waiting for Windows to load.

Shut down all programs currently running on your computer. Then click on the "Start" button on the left-hand side of the Windows Start Bar, also known as the Task Bar. By default, the Start Bar is on the bottom of the screen with the "Start" button on the lower left-hand corner.

Type "msconfig" into the Run text field and click "OK." When the System Configuration Tool opens up, locate the "BOOT.INI" tab at the top and click on it.

Place a check mark in the first box in the list that is titled "/SAFEBOOT." Press "OK" after you have checked that box off. You will then be prompted to restart your computer. Select "Restart" and the computer will automatically restart in Safe Mode.

Return to Normal Mode when finished in Safe Mode by repeating steps 1 through 3 above, except this time deselect the check box next to the "/SAFEBOOT" option.
