How to Find Updated Device Drivers for a PC

Device drivers are the brains behind the device, and updating them is just as important as installing any other required software and hardware updates. The first step in troubleshooting any malfunctioning hardware is to check the cable connections; often, the second step is to try to find a more compatible driver. These special programs enjoy communicating with your computer's system so that their attached component can operate properly.

Instructions

    • 1

Click "Start," then choose "Control Panel." Next, select "Printers and Other Hardware."

    • 2

Click on "System" to bring up System Properties. Next, go to the "Hardware" tab.

    • 3

Click on "Windows Update" located in the Drivers section.

    • 4

Select "If my device needs a driver, go to Windows Update without asking me," and then press "OK." You will be taken back to the System Properties dialog box.

    • 5

Go to the "Automatic Updates" tab and select "Automatic." Use both drop-down lists to select the frequency and time for routine updates. Click "Apply" and then press "OK."

    • 6

Go to Windows Catalog from Microsoft to get the newest system updates. The link is listed in "Additional Resources," below. Your system will immediately be checked to ensure that it has the latest updates. (Note: This step is extremely important to stay up to date on some programs that may have been missed in Automatic Updates.)

Tips & Warnings

  • Set the Automatic Updates to a time when you are not likely to use your computer, such as between midnight and 5 a.m. When you log on, the installation is the only thing left to be done. This final process is typically completed in the background, allowing you to work without hindering your productivity. Installing the required Windows Catalog updates can takes from a few minutes on up to complete, so schedule this task during down time.

  • Don't underestimate the importance of installing system updates by way of the Windows Catalog online. Especially if you create software, service packs for framework updates for VB, .NET and others are vital.
