How to Learn Touch Typing Online

Have you ever wondered how some people can move their hands like a blur over the keyboard, fill the screen with text and do so without looking down? The technique of touch typing increases your words per minute by teaching your fingers the layout of a keyboard and freeing your concentration. Colleges offer courses, but a more economical alternative to learning how to touch type can be found online. Instructions

    • 1

Go to typeonline.co.uk. There are a variety of free online courses and tutorials for touch typing on the Internet. Typeonline offers a short series of lessons on touch typing and is a solid introduction to the technique.

    • 2

Click Keyboard lessons. All five lessons are listed on the left side of the page.

    • 3

Review the notes below the exercise window. Each lesson has a summary of what will be covered in the exercise. Lesson 1 introduces the home row, keys "a" through the semi-colon.

    • 4

Select Exercise 1 from the keyboard exercise list and click Start.

    • 5

Follow the instructions for Exercise 1 and type the letters that appear in bold.

    • 6

Review the results of the exercise. At the end of an exercise, Typeonline tells you typing speed in words per minute (WPM) based on when you start typing, your accuracy and what mistakes you made.

    • 7

Move on to Lesson 2 when you are ready. Lesson 2 covers the QWERTY row for which the standard keyboard layout is named. This row includes keys "q" through "p." Lessons are cumulative, so the QWERTY exercise also refers back to the home row.

    • 8

Complete the exercises of Lessons 3, which covers the bottom row above the space bar.

    • 9

Complete Lesson 4, which adds the number row.

    • 10

Complete Lesson 5. Lesson 5 introduces shift and the punctuation keys. By the time you have completed Lesson 5, you have developed the core technique of touch typing.

Tips & Warnings

  • After mastering the basics, you just need to practice to increase your WPM and incur fewer mistakes. Typeonline is only one of many websites offering lessons on touch typing. Explore and try out the various courses and games to continue improving your technique.

  • It takes patience to learn proper touch typing techniques. Not all keyboards are laid out the same way.
