How to Find Your Email Pop Server

The POP (Post Office Protocol) server is the computer that stores email sent to you until you have a chance to manage it with your email program. The program can leave the email on your server while downloading it, delete it from the server or, in the case of spam, send the message to trash without you seeing it. In any case, you need to define the POP server to your email program.

Instructions

    • 1

Check to see if your email provider is on the list provided in the first Reference below. If so, use the POP server next to it in parentheses: Gmail (pop.gmail.com), Yahoo (pop.mail.yahoo.com), Mail (pop1.mail.com), Hotmail (pop3.live.com).

    • 2

Try using the form "pop.<email>.com" or "pop3.<email>.com" where <email> is the name of your email service provider. For example, if your service provider is Freeserve, try the form "pop.freeserve.com."

    • 3

Check the support site of your email provider to see if the server is defined under a FAQ or knowledge base.

    • 4

Call your email provider's customer service department if none of these methods works. Though this is the only method for some providers, it is not necessarily convenient. You might be put on hold for a while before you actually reach someone.
