How to Learn Gaelic Online

Gaelic is the language of the Celtic people of Ireland. One of the first European languages to have a written form, Gaelic today is generally spoken as a second language by those living in western Ireland, Scotland and on the Isle of Man (where it is known as the Manx language). However, those wishing to stay in touch with their Celtic roots are choosing to learn Gaelic or practice it, often online.

Instructions

    • 1

Take a Gaelic language class. There are free, informal classes on the Web that can help you learn Gaelic, or you can apply to a Gaelic program at a university. Save all of your notes and other information to review periodically.

    • 2

Use a translator. Type a list of common phrases or select an e-mail, then use an online translator to see the same phrases in Gaelic. Practice saying the phrases, and examine them for commonalities.

    • 3

Read an online Irish magazine, such as Beo. Beo has a Gaelic-to-English glossary at the end of each article.

    • 4

Create your own Web site. Practice your Gaelic language skills by writing a Gaelic blog or creating a Gaelic Web site. You can write in Gaelic and ask for feedback from readers. You can also translate English into Gaelic for others.

Tips & Warnings

  • Use social networking to help you, as well. Join a Gaelic-speaking chat room or group, or look for someone who can help you learn the language through chatting or e-mailing.

  • Don't ignore television. BBC's Gaelic station has live video streaming of shows in Gaelic.
