Liver spots are a type of pigmentation.
Liver spots are a type of pigmentation.

Pigmentation occurs when the skin darkens because skin cells produce melanin, which is stimulated by the sun. Other things that can cause pigmentation are an overabundance of hormones. For example, pregnant women may notice dark spots or blotches on their face, neck and forehead. Some people even suffer from hyperpigmentation, which occurs when skin cells release an abundance of color. In that case, you can have patches of tan to patchy brown to grayish black skin. Here is how to avoid all forms of pigmentation.

Things You'll Need:

  • Sunscreen Hat Water Skin creams that contain lightening ingredients
  1. Step 1

Protect your skin from the sun. Lather on sun block to areas exposed to sunlight, and wear a hat. Avoid the sun between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m., when it is at its brightest. If you protect your skin from sun exposure, then you will lessen your chances of getting skin pigmentation.

  2. Step 2

Avoid products that can irritate the skin and lead to pigmentation. These include products with fragrance, dye, alcohol and lanolin. Also, avoid abrasive cleansers, as they can irritate the skin and make the skin more susceptible to pigmentation.

  3. Step 3

Drink lots of water and stay well hydrated. The plumper your skin cells are, the healthier they are going to look.

  4. Step 4

Use skin creams that contain skin-lightening ingredients such as arbutin, kgic acid, Vitamin C, azelaic acid and melanin-suppressing peptides. These will help not only prevent and avoid pigmentation but also get rid of any pigmentation should you find yourself with a patch or two.

  5. Step 5

Moisturize any area of your skin that is regularly exposed to sunlight. In the areas of your face and neck, massage the skin in a circular motion when you moisturize it. This will help with circulation and keeping the skin cells healthy.

Tips & Warnings
  • If you notice a few spots of pigmentation, you can use a bit of lime on them to lighten the spots.
  • If you are still experiencing pigmentation, talk to a dermatologist to find out what your options are to get rid of the pigmentation you have before beginning a prevention regime.
