How to Troubleshoot DVD Decoder Problems in Windows Vista

Microsoft Windows Vista users often report having issues with playing DVDs. Many times, they are experiencing DVD decoder problems. DVD decoders are the software that allow the DVD player to read and play encrypted DVDs. These steps will help you troubleshoot problems such as being presented with the common Vista error message, "Decoder Error The video decoder has either malfunctioned or is not installed. Please restart Media Center and/or the computer."

1. Try a simple reboot of your computer before attempting any solutions that might involve more time or expense. Restarting the system often solves the problem.

2. Go to "http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/en/default.aspx" and get the free update for Windows Media Player. This download includes many of the latest codecs necessary to play DVDs.

3. Purchase third party codec software and install it so that your DVD player can read the encrypted DVD.

4. See if an expired decoder is the reason that your DVD player will not work. You can do this by setting the clock back on your computer, restarting the system and trying to play the DVD again.
